The brief

Planned around the four o’clock light

The house had good bones and a bad plan. Every room faced the street, and the long west wall — the one that catches the best light in Jakarta — was given over to a corridor and two storage closets.

We moved the living areas to that wall and pushed circulation to the darker side. Lime plaster, reclaimed teak, and a single run of joinery do the rest. Nothing here is rare; it is simply placed where it belongs.

What the house is made of

The palette is short on purpose: lime plaster on the walls, reclaimed teak underfoot, rattan where a surface gets touched every day. None of it is precious, and all of it is repairable — a chipped plaster corner can be filled on a Saturday, and the teak takes a scratch as evidence rather than damage.

Storage runs as one continuous line of joinery along the corridor wall, so the living areas never have to carry the clutter of a family of four. Handles are recessed, not applied. From the sofa you read the room as a single surface; up close you find the doors.
